Renton is a strong community and a growing suburb that takes great pride in its diverse population from the Highlands to the shores of Lake Washington. This community has ultimately stood the test of time, although it has seen its share of ups and downs.
Renton has a relatively violent past. During the 1850's the earliest pioneers mined ore and constructed a sawmill. However, fights broke out all over the area when conflicts erupted with the Native Indian tribes. As the result of these conflicts with Native Indian tribes, the mill was destroyed by fire, and the majority of these earliest pioneers relocated elsewhere, although the conflicts only lasted a few months. Eventually the settlement of Renton starting rebounding and was finally platted. By 1910, mills, farms, and mines were flourishing primarily because the local rivers were great for industry. The small community developed businesses, schools, and churches. The community was considered to be booming by 1941, when Boeing relocated to the community of Renton that same year.
Renton was simply an open space next to the trail from Seattle just over a century ago. The land had long been home to the Duwamish Indian tribe and had the Cedar and Black Rivers running through and was surrounded by densely wooded hills. Permanent villages were built by the Duwamish Indian tribe who had their fishing weirs next to the rivers.
Among the first pioneers of European descent was a man named Henry Tobin and his wife named Diana. On a donation claim on the banks of the Black and cedar Rivers, they built their first home in 1853. In 1857, Diana married a man named Erasmus Smithers following the death of Mr. Tobin. Mr. Smithers platted the settlement on a portion of the property that was owned by he and his wife.
With the financial support of a Captain named William Renton, Mr. Smithers established the Renton Coal Company in 1873. Captain Renton, was one of the founders of the first sawmill in the settlement and was also a wealthy businessman. Captain Renton along with his partner named William Talbot was responsible for the construction of the first railway system used in the territory.
The year 1901 brought the incorporation of Renton as a town. The first mayor in the town of Renton was a doctor who provided health care for the miners who worked in the coal mines in Renton, named r was Dr. Abijah Ives Beach. The first town offices were located in Tonkin's General Store, which is currently located where Tonkin's Park is located today.
Slowly the town of Renton evolved from a fledgling community into an urban center from 1920 through 1930. During the 1930's coal mining and other early industries, such as PACCAR (Pacific Car and Foundry) remained an important part of the economy of the community. In order to serve the needs of the coal miners and their families, other small businesses were established. The US Junk Company opened in 1927, and many relocations and name changes later, continues to do business as McLendon Hardware.
A turning point for the community came when the Boeing Aircraft Company increased its production of aircraft during WW II. The population of Renton was 4,488 people in 1941. However, thousands arrived in Renton seeking employment with the construction of the Renton Boeing plant for the production of the famous B-29 aircraft.
Most of these people continued to make their homes in Renton after the war, and have since been absorbed into other industries in close by Seattle, as well as in Renton. The population of Renton remained constant, unlike other war industrial regions that declined following the end of the war.
The current population of Renton is more than 80,000 people and continually growing. Renton is still home to many different service industries and small businesses in addition the Seattle Seahawks training camp, and the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, PACCAR, as well as The Landing.
Renton is currently reinventing itself to become a classier place to live from an industrial type of community. Recently a new shopping and residential and shopping complex has been constructed. This complex in known as The Landing and is reminiscent of Redmond Town Center with the added benefit of apartment buildings on site as well as its outdoor mall.
The downtown area has businesses that have been in business for a much longer time and have somewhat of a more lived-in feeling. For instance, the Melrose Grill opened in 1901 and specializes in grilled meats, such as pork chops, salmon, and especially steaks. The Liberty Cafe has already gained a reputation for offering the best coffee in Renton and Possibly Seattle, although it has only been open a few short years. Visitor and locals alike enjoy the Met Wine Bar, Pop! Gourmet Popcorn, and the Terrible Beauty Irish Pub.
